My Opinion
Genetically modified animals are ok, but only as long as it's necessary for health benefits or scientific research. Using these animals for profit isn't fair to them. Animals like the lemurat (above) are developed as luxury pets. This seems to be similar to crossbreeding dogs or cats, but it cannot be done through natural reproduction. The process of genetic modification can kill and/or deform the organism. When talking about quick growing salmon, Andrew Kimbrell, the executive director of the Center for Food Safety says: “It is extremely disappointing that the Obama Administration continues to push approval of this dangerous and unnecessary product, the GE salmon has no socially redeeming value; it’s bad for the consumer, bad for the salmon industry and bad for the environment. FDA’s decision is premature and misguided.” If something unnecessary can be dangerous to the life of an animal, the environment, and the people who buy it, then why should it be used? Is a faster profit really worth the risk?
However, in some cases the risk should be taken. If animals can be developed to treat diseases or make medicine, then it's ok to risk a few lives to save even more. Something like this can become the new normal because of it's benefits. This would be an amazing advancement for humans. If we can alter things to fit our needs, then that can lead to new scientific advancements.
